There're plenty of recreational outdoor courses offered at FCCJ, from adventure initiative to wilderness adventure training, cycling, canoeing and even rock climbing. Most of these courses are hidden secrets for most students, but the Campus Voice is digging deep and finding information for you.

One of the coolest courses being offered right now is the Rock Climbing. Its official title of the course is called "PEM- 1320: Beginning Recreational Climbing," This is a two credit hour elective course for a student who is pursuing an AA degree. The course is designed to build self-esteem, team participation and also to give students a lifetime full of experience.

There are no prerequisites to enroll in this course but it is only offered at the Nassau Center.

The wall is about 30 feet high and the length of the course is about 8 weeks. Ropes and harness are provided by the school for you to use while taking the course.

If you can wait for the summer or fall to sign up for this course, there is another option. Recently, Aaron Davis, Student Ambassador for Kent Campus, came together with YMCA to offer all FCCJ students and staff the opportunity to try rock climbing.

The YMCA-South Metro located on Phillips Highway and Emerson, has one of the best climbing gyms in all of Jacksonville. They offer five different wall designs for people with different levels of experience.

Davis is a passionate climber and is very excited about this new relationship with the YMCA and is inviting everyone at the school to take advantage of this opportunity.

The regular cost for climbing at YMCA is $15 if you are not a member of the fitness center already; however, if you are a student or faculty member you may climb for only $8 every Monday from 6:00PM -9:00PM.
