The 12th Annual danceWORKS Spring Dance Concert opened March 26 with a bang. This year's performance stood apart from the past years because of the focus on local dance talent and artists. The performance was diverse showcasing some of Jacksonville's and FCCJ's best dancers in ballet, modern, ballroom, and Bollywood dancing.

There was also the Braided Light Dance Project, an innovative new modern dance company whose mission is to produce sophisticated and inspired modern dance.

Their act entitled Autophiobia was a highlight of the show. It featured aerial work along with dance which produced a visual feast for the audience.

Creston Fort, a psychology major said, "This was my favorite [act]. It was the most interesting, and their movements were something I connected to."

Some other acts that stood out were the Ballroom Bolero and Argentine Tango. Kris Kohlhaas, a graphic design/multimedia major and ballroom performer said that he thought the overall show went really well.

Kohlhass also said, "I was very pleased with our performance and the Bollywood dance was among my favorites from the night. It was a high emotional dance with great music which just made everyone backstage want to dance."

Jen Redman, a psychology major agreed and said, "The Bollywood beat was an excellent way to end the show. It left me wanting to get up and join the dancers on stage."

Kohlhass also said, "The whole performance could be summed up in a quote from Havelock Ellis, 'Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts because it is not mere translation or abstraction from life; it is life itself.' Everyone in the show was truly expressing life and it was awesome."

With each year the danceWORKS Spring Dance Concert keeps getting better and better and shows no sign of slowing down.

DanceWORKS at FCCJ will be holding auditions for intermediate dancers for its performing company April 20 at 6pm in M2110 on FCCJ South Campus.

In the years to come danceWORKS will continue to capture art through motion and be just as creative in presenting it to entranced audiences. If you missed this year's performance be sure to stop by the Wilson Center and get a copy of the show.
