You can further explore different missions and stories through 3 diverse modes: campaign, multiplayer, and special ops.
Players get a full sense of the different facets of war in the campaign mode. A player may ride in the back of a Hum-V through a hostel village with a "do not engage" order or snoop into a snow covered enemy base knowing, if detected, you'll be hopelessly out numbered and out gunned. There's even a mission, in which a player acts as an undercover terrorist. Due to the controversy of this issue, the game gives you the option to skip this level.
In multiplayer mode you have the option of either going online to play against people all around the world or play against your friends in their own home on a on a single console.
You and other players can create your own player profile that can be used anytime you are online or split screen. With this profile you can rank higher as if you were enlisted yourself. The higher your rank the more weapons, perks and equipment you can unlock.
Other additions to the game are titles, call signs and kill streak rewards. Titles are unlocked by completing various tasks in multiplayer such as destroying an enemy chopper. Each time you level up you will get a different call sign that identifies with your current rank such as major or sergeant.
Like the previous Modern Warfare, players will get rewards for obtaining a high kill streak without dying. In this game you are able to customize which reward you will earn based on the number of kills. Rewards range from radar jammers to stealth bombers and in some cases a terrible combination of the two. There is even a reward called 'tactical nuke' which ends the match regardless of time or points.
Modern Warfare II's special ops mode is a welcomed edition to the franchise. Unlike the campaign mode, there's no storyline. Each mission is self contained and can be completed within a few minutes.
Though special ops lacks the option of customization it's still a fast paced, high reward game play that appeals to the casual gamer because he or she can still gain a feeling of satisfaction without sacrificing hours of their day.
Special ops is divided into 5 sections: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, each section requiring a certain amount of stars to move on to the next. A player earns more stars for completing missions on a higher difficulty.
The drawback of playing so many characters is that there is no emotional attachment to any of them. It makes it difficult to care about the story, but we suspect that most gamers don't play shooters for their plots.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is currently available for XBOX 360, PS3, and the PC.
